WASTE MANAGEMENT IN THE INSTITUTIONS UNDER GURUVAYUR DEVASWOM BOARD

The Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple located in the town of Guruvayur in Thrissur district, Kerala, India. The temple is one of the most important and sacred pilgrim centre’s in the state and is managed by a special administrative committee, known as the Guruvayur Devaswom, under the control of the Government of Kerala. The Guruvayur Devaswom also maintains a unique elephant sanctuary in the town, which is one of its kind. The sanctuary currently houses around 56 elephants and is said to be one of the largest captive co-habitation facilities for Asiatic elephants. The elephant sanctuary sees a huge footfall, in terms of the pilgrims and tourists visiting every day and the facility is also used to train the elephants to participate in the various festivals that occur throughout the year. More than 50 elephants housed together in one campus would inevitably produce a lot of waste and the disposal of elephant dung and the leftovers from their feed of fronds, branches and leaves needs to be done carefully, in a safe and environment friendly manner. This is in addition to the considerable quantities of food waste and leftovers and plastic wastes which are generated within the Guruvayur temple premises.
